Can I use Thompsons water sealer over wood that has been painted?
Will it adhere to the painted surface, and help protect it? Wanted to put it on a Wood Table top I had painted with stripes, to help protect the edges from chipping.

There is no such thing as a modern sealant that won't work with another product anymore.
All sealants sold today work as a barrier. It will, for the most part, seal as well as plastic. The only real penetrating A Thompsons product does nowadays is with regard to sealant.
Unless you have one in reserve, in your garage, that is older than 20-30 yrs or so, you will have no issues.
Oil and water based sealants all now act as a barrier. A protective, if plastic, sealant. They no longer penetrate, and for a good reason. The original chemicals that allowed this have been deemed harmful.
In fact, they were also deemed as being highly flammable. Anyone that tells you differently will be telling you less than the truth.
